Canine potty training is pretty easy once you get the basics down. Are you tired of picking up smelly piles of poop from off your living room floor? Are you sick of soaking up pee stains from off your carpet? There is a solution.
Unfortunately, people are being given the wrong canine potty training advice. Whether you have a puppy or a new dog that needs to be housebroken, here are 3 golden rules to canine potty training that will make your life easier and your house cleaner.
Canine Potty Training Rule #1 - Get a Regular Feeding Schedule
Canine Potty Training Rule #1 - Get a Regular Feeding Schedule
Get your dog on a regular feeding schedule. This is a must. You need to know when your dog is going to poop. The only way to know this is if you get him on a strict feeding and watering schedule.
Canine Potty Training Rule #1 - Crate Train Him Immediately
Lots of dog owners hate the idea of putting their dog in a crate. But actually, dogs love this sanctuary! You have to associate the crate with a pleasant experience. The crate is where the dog eats and sleeps. It should be only wide enough for the dog to stand and sleep.
Dogs don't poop where they sleep and eat - ever. By putting him in a crate, he will learn that it's uncomfortable for him to pee and poop in it, and he will let you know when he has to go poop outside.
Canine Potty Training Rule #3 - Immediate Correction a Must
Every single time your dog pees and/or poops in your house - be it accidentally or purposefully - you must give him immediate strong correction. He should be able to associate a negative consequence with "doing his business" in your home and a positive consequence for peeing and pooping outside.
If you correct him after the fact, he won't understand why you're correcting him. So it's important that you watch him so that you'll know exactly when to give him the correction.
Last but not least, don't rub your dog's nose in his poop or pee. I don't know who came up with that! But it totally does not work and it's cruel to the dog. When you see your dog getting ready to poop, in a stern voice say "No!" Your dog must see you as the leader of the pack. When your voice conveys authority, he will respect you.
Then immediately take him outside to poop. As soon as he poops and/or pees outside give him lavish praise by rubbing him and saying "Good dog!" in a very soft but high pitch voice. You want him to be able to differentiate the two different tones of voice for when he does something good and for when he does something bad.
